Sony Announces Slimmer PS5 With Optional Disc Drive: Details On Price, Release Date, And More

Sony has finally released a new updated PlayStation 5 with a smaller form factor after months of speculation that the gaming giant could release something slimmer. However, it should be noted that Sony is not calling the new PS5 model Slim; Instead, it only refers to it as a new PS5 with a smaller size.

The new version of the console comes in two variants, like the original model: a standard version with a built-in disc drive, and another digital-only console. But as rumored, Sony has now added the option to add an optional 4K Blu-ray disc drive to the digital model if desired. The new model also comes with a default 1TB SSD, replacing the old 825GB SSD.

Sony claims that the new models have reduced volume by more than 30% and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the old ones. Also, unlike the OG PS5 which had two panels, there are now four separate cover panels with the top panels being glossy and the bottom two panels being matte like the old model.

Additionally, a disc drive for the digital model will be sold as a separate accessory for $79 (roughly Rs. 6,500), allowing users to play their disc-based game library.

Despite this, Sony has time and time again introduced new slimmer, updated models – be it the PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim or PS4 Slim. But this time, while the size and weight differences are there, Sony has made a few changes to the design. This could be for a number of reasons, such as the fact that you’ve already achieved dominance with the PS5; it doesn’t want an unfamiliar looking console on the market.

When will the new PS5 model be released?

Sony says the new PS5 will hit shelves this holiday season in November in the US. When current PS5 models run out of stock, the new PS5 will become Sony’s default SKU, and the old one will be discontinued.

As for the price, the new PS5 disc version costs $499, while the digital model costs $449. India pricing and release details are currently unclear.
